I am reading a wonderful little book for Advent it's title: "Do nothing Christmas is Coming!"
So this weeks Friday Five is simple.
List Five things you won't be doing to prepare for Christmas.
1) For the first time in thirty years I won’t be sending a Christmas letter.
2) Because of financial hardship we won’t be buying many presents: just for the kids (two) and grandchildren (2).
3) I won’t be baking cookies.
4) I won’t be making snow angels (this assumes that we don’t get any snow, a 99% accurate assumption)
5) I won’t be drinking eggnog.
And while you are doing nothing play the bonus, put your feet up and listen to your favourite Advent Carol, and post it or a link to it...
Like many, I adore O come, O come Emmanuel, but I have a special fondness for Comfort, comfort ye my people. At the time of a spiritual renewal in my life that led to my baptism, I lived just blocks away from the carillon tower of the chapel at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. I could hear the bells easily, and this is one of the tunes that was played regularly that Advent. Hearing the music evokes that time in my life that was full of spiritual stirring and seeking, as well as other memories of that place and time. It will forever be special to me.
Simple!

I am going to snag that cartoon ...I love it
I won't be sending out a newsletter ( I never do)
I won't be baking cookies (I leave that up to E and Kristen)
I won't be scrambling for last minute gifts (I think we are done and we are economizing too)
I won't have as many people to mail cards to this year for a variety of reasons.
I won't be making sand angels (our equivalent of snow angels as it is pretty brisk out here in Paradise and very wet!
Love ya,
The excitement this year for us is because our 2-yr-old will really understand Christmas for the first time. With that comes the weight of wanting to let her know it's not just about receiving presents. There are so many parts about it that can be joyful without the money part.
I need to look up the words to your carol.
I love Advent hymns and the Episcopal church has so many from which to choose! My favorite is "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus". I like "There's a voice in the Wilderness Crying", "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent", "Blest Be the King Whose Coming" and "Watchman Tell Us of the Night". A great site to listen to these (and lots of others) is http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/advent.html
Great cartoon. My friends will love it, so I'll be emailing it around. Good list, but I love Christmas cards too much not to send them, but I get fewer every year. . . .
That was a different tune than I expected, but lovely. And so nice to see what appeared to be a fairly young organist -- I keep fearing that not as many young people are studying organ these days. I'm seeing a common theme of less emphasis on presents and more on "presence" this year.
I like that tune for it; it's jaunty!
The older we get, the faster the season seems to pass....
We are not buying Christmas gifts either. Only for the boys. I like that. The season should not be about gift giving so much. Takes the stress fully out of it. I've never done a Christmas letter, but will probably send cards (with Chickadees of course!) and won't be doing cookies or egg nog either. :c)
